Relocation Of Gurdwara Sahib Selayang Baru

RELOCATION OF GURDWARA SAHIB SELAYANG BARU (GSSB), BATU CAVES, SELANGOR, MALAYSIA.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.   With great sadness our Sikh Community of Gurdwara Sahib Selayang Baru (GSSB) in Batu Caves would like to protest the decision of present GSSB Management & Land Committee from relocating the present 50 year old place of worship to a new location which is very inconvenient for our Sikh Community in Selayang Baru, Gombak and neighbouring areas.

The main reason of relocating was trigged by a new plan for developing a high rise condominium at the back of GSSB on Government reserved land. The developers don’t acquire enough land for the development of a condominium project so they want the GSSB land for the approval from local authorities to start this condominium project.

In the mid-1950s, there were a few Sikhs residing in the Selayang Baru area. Most of them were dairy farmers, government staff or running their own businesses. These Sikhs build their first Gurdwara Sahib in 1974. It was a single story wooden building with a zinc roof.   by the late 1980s, the Sikh population in the area had grown considerably, therefore it was necessary to build a larger Gurdwara Sahib building.

In 1990 a new double story, brick structure was built adjacent to the site of the old Gurdwara Sahib. The cost of construction of this building was RM800,000 which was raised by donation from the Sikh Sangat . This new Gurdwara was declared open by the Panj Pyaare on 11 November 1991. The size of the Gurdwara Sahib is approximately 10,000 ft.²

Over the past 50 years, our Sikh Community of Selayang Baru in Batu Caves Selangor, built this GSSB with their hard earn money and funds collected by donations from all over Malaysia. Our community lived in harmony with multiracial communities in this area. Now, we face forced relocation of our only place of worship (GSSB) without the consent of our Sikh Community in Selayang Baru.

A few town hall sessions were held by GSSB Management & Land Committee with relevant authorities. Our Sikh Community collectively objected for all reasons for not transparently shared and information discussed.

We strongly object with other reasons:

i.The new area suggested is very remote without any public to access conveniently.

ii.No public transport facility

iii.The previous history that the suggested land is flood prone area.

iv.To construct a  new GSSB building is going to create another nightmare for our community to collect enough funds which can be beyond our reach compared to the present value of our existing building  with all the current facilities:-

Punjabi School Gurbani, Kirtan and Reciting religious studies,Traditional musical instruments training Sports & recreation for young and old.

All Sikhs from within reach areas/district like Gombak, Batu, Segambut, Jinjang, Kepong, Sungai Buloh, Rawang and other Klang Valley or Selangor area comes together for satsang and all our Gurpurab and other programmes  and to receive blessing for their wellbeing in life.

This is not just a matter of inconvenience; it's about preserving the history, culture and social fabric that has been woven over half a century.

According to Malaysia's National Housing Policy (2018-2025), one of its key objectives is to ensure adequate and harmonious quality of life for all Malaysians (source: Ministry of Housing and Local Government). Yet this forced relocation contradicts this policy by disrupting the lives of long-standing Sikh Community in Selayang Baru.

We urge all Relevant & Local Authorities to RECONSIDER this decision. Respect our rights as citizens and engage with our Sikh Community of Selayang Baru in open dialogue about any proposed changes affecting our community.

We the Sikh Community strongly object the relocation of GSSB to new suggested location and wished to maintain the present location at all reasons.   Our Humble request to all, please stand with us to protect our only place of worship (GURDWARA SAHIB SELAYANG BARU) in Batu Caves.
