Stopp steinbruddet i Bremanger! // Stop the building of a quarry in Bremanger, Norway!

Mandag 5. februar kom det umusikalske vedtaket om steinbrudd og utskipningshavn i Frøysjøen. Et steinbrudd og den tilhørende industriaktiviteten i dette området vil få dramatiske konsekvenser for kulturminner i Frøysjøen og spesielt helleristningsområdet Vingen som er et av de mest autentiske helleristningsområdene i Europa. Vingen er et svært spesielt område, ikke bare på grunn av de over 6000 år gamle helleristningene, men også fordi helleristningene ligger i det uberørte miljøet i Frøysjøen. Her kan en se fjordlandskap lignende det steinalderens bergkunstskapere har observert. Dette området står nå i fare for å forringes for alltid av støyforurensning, av steintransport, lysforurensning og ikke minst støvforurensning. Dette landskapet vil for alltid være ødelagt.  

Både Riksantikvaren, Statsforvalteren og Klima- og Miljødepartementet har vært imot tiltaket. Det har kommet en rekke innspill og klager, blant annet på grunn av kulturminnene og flere rødlistede arter i den boreonemorale regnskogen i fjordlandskapet. Alle offentlige høringsinstanser har vært imot steinbruddet. Offentlige instanser har brukt flere hundre millioner på bevaring, konservering og forskning på bergkunsten i Vingen helleristingsområde. Likevel har det nå gått gjennom et vedtak. De som skal drifte steinbruddet, Beheersmij Fr. Bontrup BD, er et nederlandsk selskap som vil utvinne 360 millioner tonn stein. De skriver på sine nettsider at mer aktivitet i området planlegges. Steinen skal brukes i veikonstruksjon og i offshore-produkter. Hvorfor lar norske myndigheter et nederlandsk selskaps økonomiske profitt gå foran hensynet til umistelig natur og kulturarv? Det er urovekkende at et slikt vedtak fattes så kort tid etter NRKs avsløringer om den stille nedbyggingen av naturen i dette landet.

Bremanger kommune har lenge hatt et politisk vedtak om å fremme Vingen helleristningsområde for nominasjon til UNESCOs verdensarvliste for kultur- og naturarv. Den samme kommunen har nå kjempet frem ødeleggelse av det samme området som de ønsker verdensbeskyttelse av. Det er et paradoks, som viser hvordan økonomisk profitt stilles fremfor både natur- og kultur-arv. Denne situasjonen krever bredere offentlig bevissthet og engasjement. Skriv under på dette oppropet, spre kunnskap om trusselen mot kulturminnene og naturen, og oppfordre til en kollektiv innsats for å stanse steinbruddet!

On Monday, February 5th, the disconcerting decision regarding the quarry and shipping port in Frøysjøen was announced. The establishment of a quarry and the associated industrial activities in this region will have profound implications for cultural heritage in Frøysjøen, particularly affecting the rock carving site of Vingen—one of the most authentic rock art areas in Europe. Vingen holds significance not only due to its over 6000-year-old rock carvings but also because of its location within the environment of Frøysjøen. Here, one can witness fjord landscapes akin to those observed by Stone Age rock art creators. This area is now in danger of irreversibly deteriorating due to noise pollution, stone transportation, light pollution, and, notably, dust pollution. This landscape will forever be destroyed.

Despite opposition from the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage (Riksantikvaren), the County Governor (Statsforvalteren), and the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the decision has been made. Numerous contributions and complaints have been submitted, addressing concerns about cultural heritage and various endangered species in the boreonemoral rainforest within the fjord landscape. All public consultation bodies have rejected the quarry project. Public authorities have invested hundreds of millions in the preservation, conservation, and research of the rock art in the Vingen rock carving area. Nevertheless, the decision has been enacted. The company set to operate the quarry, Beheersmij Fr. Bontrup BD, is a Dutch entity intending to extract 360 million tons of stone, with plans for increased activity in the area. The extracted stone is designated for road construction and offshore products. Why do Norwegian authorities prioritize the economic profit of a Dutch company over the preservation of invaluable nature and cultural heritage?

Bremanger municipality has long held a political resolution to promote the Vingen rock carving area for nomination to UNESCO's World Heritage List for cultural and natural heritage. Paradoxically, the same municipality is now advocating for the destruction of the very area it seeks global protection for. This situation underscores the prioritization of economic gain over both natural and cultural heritage. It necessitates broader public awareness and engagement. Sign this petition, disseminate knowledge about the threat to cultural heritage and the environment, and encourage collective efforts to halt the quarry project!
